Top Recipes of 2017

Google has released the most popular recipe terms searched in South Africa over 2017. Some expected, and some might come as a surprise. One thing is for sure, the internet has become the number one source of recipes in our homes. Just don’t forget to bookmark when you find a goodie! Nothing worse than not being able to find a new favourite again.

South Africa’s most searched recipes:

  1. Oxtail recipes
A rich tasty oxtail stew was popular this year. We like to think our great prices on oxtail throughout the year, pushed this trend!
  1. Sweet potato recipes
Sweet potato fries have become a constant in restaurants. Not only do they taste better, but they are said to be healthier for you too!
  1. Beef stew recipes
Beef stew was the third most searched term this year. It’s great to feed the family, and to get the maximum goodness out of your vegetables.
  1. Vegan recipes
We’ve seen a definite increase in plant-based diets and meat-free days in 2017. You might have seen more mushroom burgers on your braai this summer. Try it this year, it might change your life!

  1. Prawn recipes

Prawn and seafood dishes can take you to the coastlines of the Mediterranean from the comfort of your living room. As people enjoy more home cooking and explore new recipes, we’ve seen this common restaurant enjoyed food created at home, filled our kitchen with rich aromas.

  1. Spaghetti recipes

We’ve had spiral veg, veggetti, butternoodles, and other low carb alternatives become available in stores this year but seems the good ole spaghetti still tops in SA. Easy to make, with fresh ingredients, this low-cost comfort food is quick to prepare too.

  1. Cauliflower recipes

Cauliflower seems to do no wrong. Gone are the days of the soggy, soft mush and hello to cauli-rice and sticky cauliflower buffalo wings. It seems to make a healthy alternative to some of our favourites.

  1. Bread recipes

Bread is probably the most staple food of all time. With the increase of healthy flours such as stone-ground and rye, higher protein flours such as almond and diet restrictions such as banting and gluten intolerance, we’ve more people making their own bread at home. Who doesn’t love the smell of fresh bread baking in the oven?
