For the Apple Base:
- 4 apples, peeled and roughly chopped
- 180ml (3/4 cup) water
- 45ml (3 Tbsp) sugar
- 30ml (2 Tbsp) lemon juice
- 2.5ml (1/2 tsp) cinnamon
- 1.25ml (1/4 tsp) mixed spice
- 4 allspice
- 1 cinnamon stick
For the Crumble Topping:
- 125ml (1/2 cup) flour
- 60ml (1/4 cup) white sugar
- 60ml (1/4 cup) brown sugar
- 45ml (3 Tbsp) butter, melted
For the Sweet Crispy Tortilla:
- 6 tortillas, divided into 8 triangles each
- Oil for frying
- 60ml (1/4 cup) white sugar
- 5ml (1 tsp) cinnamon
Directions
For the Apple Base:
- In a medium size saucepan, combine all the ingredients and cook for 15-20 minutes until the water has reduced by half and the apple is soft.
- Remove the allspice and cinnamon stick and mash the apple until smooth. Place into an oven safe square dish of about 15-17cm and set aside.
- Preheat your oven to 180°C.
- Combine all the ingredients and roughly mix. You want the butter to be incorporated, but still have big sugary clumps. Be careful not to overmix, otherwise a paste will form.
- Top the apple sauce with the crumble and bake for 25-30 minutes until the topping is golden brown.
- While the crumble is cooking, fry the tortilla triangles in the hot oil for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. Alternatively you can place them in the air fryer.
- Combine the sugar and cinnamon in a large bowl. Add the fried tortilla triangles and give it a good toss in the sugar mixture until well coated.
- Dip into the warm apple pie dip and enjoy!
