Hunger Month Cheque Handover – 3.4 Million Meals Raised in 2023

ALL New record set for Hunger Month 2023!

On Thursday, 20 July, Food Lover’s Market, Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, and Food Forward SA visited Lisa’s Educare Centre. Lisa Educare Centre located in Wallacedene, Cape Town is one of Food Forward SA’s beneficiary organisations. This visit was an opportunity for the Hunger Month partners to see how the much-needed funds are utilised.

Food Lover’s Market used the opportunity to hand over the 2023 Hunger Month cheque to Food Forward SA. The main focus of Food Forward SA is reducing hunger in South Africa by safely and cost-effectively securing quality food for those who need it. With over 30 million food-insecure South Africans, it’s easy to understand that hunger and food insecurity is a very serious issue in South Africa.

Through the Hunger Month campaign, Food Lover’s Market and its partners proudly raised enough donations to provide 3,400,000 meals to less-privileged South Africans. This far exceeded the original target of 3 million meals.

The Givengain page for Hunger Month is still open, if you’d like to contribute to the ongoing plight of Food Forward to feed South Africa.

According to Conrad Fick – Marketing Director at Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, Statistics South Africa reported in 2020 that almost 23.6% of citizens experience moderate to severe food insecurity. A further 14.9% of people face severe food insecurity. A further study showed that one in five South African households needs more food to eat daily.

“We all know the cost of living only continues to rise, which means these figures have also increased.” He says that according to the United Nations, a third of every billion tonnes of food produced worldwide is wasted. Now is the perfect time to implement similar initiatives.

Kate Marais, CSI Manager for the Food Lover’s Market Group, says that they set the bar very high this year and are delighted that they were able to exceed the target. “If there was ever a time to act, it’s now. Food inflation is biting, the unemployment rate is high, and our fellow South Africans cannot feed themselves. We want to thank all our partners and consumers for their help in meeting our Hunger Month goals.”

Thank you to everyone involved for helping raise the meals needed to aid the fight against hunger. Together, we can make an impact on people’s lives, and in our communities. Thank you for your big contribution Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing.
